JUST IN TIME FOR YOUR NEW YEAR YOU!!!

HELLO GLOGIS!! Its been a while, but I wanted to make sure I shared with you an (upcoming) article about the Whitestone Wellness Fair that I was a part of organizing. Please read what its all about, save the date and COME ON BY for a great day and a great start on ALL of your New Year’s Resolutions!!!

It’s that time again. The holidays have ended and a new year is upon us. While some may be full of hope about the prospect of getting started on those health and fitness resolutions, others may be wondering just how to get on track toward their goals.

Three women from Whitestone, Queens decided to organize The Whitestone Grace Wellness Fair in order to help their neighbors do just this. The committee of three are health and wellness experts: Sabrina Havens is a Licensed Acupuncturist, and Herbalist from North Nassau Acupuncture LLC in Great Neck and a Young Living Esssential Oils Distributor. She will be at the fair providing massage, acupuncture demos and therapeutic essential oil samples; Vera Levine is a retired Registered Nurse who has previously worked in Mount Sinai, Booth Memorial, Brookdale and North Shore Hospitals. In past years, she ran three health fairs at the church and was instrumental in bringing in medical professionals from NY-Presbyterian Hospital, who will be joining us this year at the Wellness Fair to provide all kinds of information regarding prevention and screening; Susan Blayer is a NY state licensed Psychotherapist and certified Group Fitness and YogaFit Instructor, who created her own fusion exercise class called Yogalicious Fitness (www.yogaliciousfitness.com).

The trio, who met through Grace Episcopal Church, which has offered the space for the event, are passionate about providing this forum for the community to encourage residents to improve themselves, their relationships, and their quality of life.

Another objective of the Wellness Fair is to give local health and fitness professionals an opportunity for networking and free publicity. As Ms. Blayer puts it, “We wanted to make sure that we were giving back to the community, not only by providing great wellness information, but also by offering local businesses, particularly the smaller ones, with an opportunity to advertise their services, free of charge.” While there is a request for participants to make a tax-deductible donation of their choice to the church (for providing the space), this is not required to have a booth and/or do a demo or presentation at the fair.

Whether attendees want to trim down and tone up, beautify and anti-age, reduce pain and promote healing, or spice up their romantic relationships, this fair has it covered!

Amongst those who were first to sign on for this day of wellness was local Chiropractor Dr. Stephen Simonetti, who will be bringing his adjustment table to do posture screenings. He will also be doing a presentation about making health and lifestyle choices. Dr. Jay Feld, Licensed Marriage and Couple Therapist, is on board to enlighten us about the best ways to boost intimacy and happiness in our relationships.

Representatives from the Whitestone New York Sports Club branch (under the leadership of Fitness Manger, Emmanuel Laflotte) will be providing body fat analysis, a live demo of their popular UXF training class, and will be sharing ways to get the most out of your diet and exercise program. Health Nuts, of Bayside, will be sending Manager Carla Duarte and her team to speak on the importance of investigating alternative medicine to increase health and heal ailments. These knowledgeable representatives from this extensive local health food store will also have on hand that day many of supplements and superfoods for purchase, and will be there to answer nutrition and supplement-related questions.

Two local moms, Kourtney Radice and Marissa Luna, who are Beachbody coaches and creators of Fixed Up Recipes, will be present to promote their latest and greatest weight loss and fitness programs. Michelle Khan, Isagenix associate and Sr. Director at Nerium International will be dolling out anti-aging and detox tips, product information and yes, samples!! Speaking of samples, if you haven’t tried Fitteam Fit All-Natural & Organic Weight Loss and Energy Drink, stop by Pam Miceli’s table to try it out. There will also be natural beauty products from Donna Casali of BeautyCounter, who will be talking to the crowd about non-toxic cosmetics. Dandylion Tea will be bringing hand-crafted, health-boosting teas full of dandelion goodness. Participants will also find tables with Chinese herbals and natural bee-products. To top it all off, there will be a live DJ to liven the mood!

Sabrina, Vera and Susan hope this event will help Queens’ residents tap into the best local resources for health, fitness and wellness. Again, it is open to the public and absolutely free to attend.

Make It Monday (MIM): Guac In a Glass (Raw Avocado Soup)

Welcome to Make it Monday (MIM)– where week after week you will find yummilicious and nourishing recipes to support your Yogalicious practice & lifestyle!

guac in a glass

Look @ this Gorg Green Goodness!!!

This week Im sharing my famous (yup, still only in my head lol) Guac in a Glass recipe.  Basically, it is like the best raw avocado soup (gazpacho) you will ever have. Seriously, its like a smooth, creamy guacamole….except without the chips cuz honestly, you dont need them!

Ingredients (& their nourishing goodness!)

One whole small-medium RIPE avocado

avocado

Forget diamonds, avocados are a girl’s best friend!  This little pod of magnificent wonder-fat increases your good cholesterol while lowering the bad, thereby promoting cardiovascular health.  But beyond the health benefits, avocados unique monounsaturated fatty acids have been shown to improve skin tone and texture, as well as having potential to increase weight loss by being more likely used as a slow-burning source of energy than stored as fat.  Yippee!!!!

1-3 cloves raw garlic (based on your preference, need to slay vampires or not slay ur significant other w ur vampire breath– just saying)

garlic

A great source of anti-oxidants, this stinky bulb is known to help boost your immune system (antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal)– & who doesnt want that?? It also does a myriad to promote heart health- primarily stabilizing blood pressure. It is an anti-inflammatory which may also help with hair loss & cold sores!

One whole small or half medium organic ripe tomato

tomato-tips-380-2

Lycopene, lycopene, lycopene, let me count the ways!! That which gives those luscious tomatoes their luscious color- also gives them their cancer-fighting super-powers & ability to improve eye health.  Blending, like cooking, helps to break down the cell walls, releasing the lycopene so that it is more readily available to the body, and pairing them with healthy fats/oils– such as those in avocados, say?–helps with absorption.

Handful organic mixed salad greens of your choice (I like one by Earthbound Farms called Zen- a mixture of baby kale, spinach & asian greens)

zen grns

Handful (or more if u dig it) fresh cilantro (stems & everything!)

cilantro

Ground, organic cumin, to taste (i like a lot of it!!)

cumin

1/2 diced jalapeno pepper

Hot red peppers and/or organic cayenne pepper, to taste– Fire it up, Baby!

Red Hot Chili Peppers arent just a great band…they are also a great high!!  When you eat these heated little suckers your bloodstream is flooded with endorphins- neurotransmitters which block pain & give you a euphoric feeling (Well that explains it!!)  The health (& heat!) component of chili is called capsaicin, a potent anti-inflammatory which improves circulation, increases metabolism (Yay fat burning!!) & also helps with cleansing by ridding  your blood and system of mucous and toxins.  And guess what– yup, it, like our cukie friends, is said to fight cancer.

Fresh squeezed juice of one medium or 2 small lime(s)

limes

Blend all of the ingredients until well combined and smooth.  You can chill it or eat @ room temperature.  If you dont have to watch your sodium intake, its extra-yummy if you add a few pinches of Himalayan Crystal Salt and perhaps a bit more cumin, cayenne to the final mixture.

ENJOY!!!

Make It Monday (MIM): Spicy Cucumber-Basil Lemonade Slushie

Welcome to Make it Monday (MIM)– where week after week you will find yummilicious and nourishing recipes to support your Yogalicious practice & lifestyle.

spicy cucumber lemonade

This week’s MIM, in honor of today being DAY 21!! of my 3 week detox and cleanse, is my famous (ok, maybe only in my own head lol) Spicy Cucumber-Basil Lemonade Slushie.  I drank this beauty just about every day I could on the cleanse & every time it made me feel amazing.

I’d swear those hot-cha-cha peppers give you a natural high!! Well guess what– it does!!  See details below….

Ingredients (& all of their nourishing goodness!!)

One whole (pref organic) Cucumber, peeled & cut

cucmber

Oh gorgeous cukes, not only are you super-hydrating with your 96%age of water, but you are also known to flush out toxins, making you a perfect friend on a cleanse!  You lower uric acid in the system, keeping our kidneys happy, too!  Just about everyone knows that you make the skin GLOW like crazy (thanks to skin beautifying minerals silicon, potassium, & magnesium–which also help lower blood pressure & boost hair & nails too) but you are not just a pretty face!  Who knew that research shows you, my beloved cukies, have major cancer-fighting potential?! Added bonus- sterols in these babies actually lower bad cholesterol.

Hot red/jalapeno/cayenne peppers, to taste (I say, the more the better!!)

Basil- again, to taste, & again I say, the more the better!

Holy pesto–basil is a triple threat as its amazing phytonutrients make it anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial AND anti-aging!! Think of it as another antioxidant-rich green leafy veggie– cuz it is!!! Darn, Im gonna be sooooo bummed when summer is over and I cant pick the stuff from my backyard!

Fresh-squeezed juice of one large or two small Lemons:

lemons

If Ive said it once, Ive said it a kazillion times– lemons might seem acidic, but they are extremely alkalizing in the body. For our detox purposes, lemons aid in digestion and help cleanse the liver.  And like the lovely basil, lemons have antibacterial, antiviral & immune boosting super-powers!

Ice:

Wanna rev up the metabolism even further?  Throw in a few handfuls of ice to make this super-slushie & keep ur inner motor running!

1/4- 1/2  RIPE Avocado (optional):

Yippee!!!!

Blend all of the ingredients until they are fully combined, and have a frothy, slushie consistency.  (If you’d like it more like a juice than a slushie, just add more water)

This smoothie is best very chilled.  Adding the avocado cuts some of the heat as well (although I hardly ever do this)

ENJOY!!!
