JUST IN TIME FOR YOUR NEW YEAR YOU!!!

HELLO GLOGIS!! Its been a while, but I wanted to make sure I shared with you an (upcoming) article about the Whitestone Wellness Fair that I was a part of organizing. Please read what its all about, save the date and COME ON BY for a great day and a great start on ALL of your New Year’s Resolutions!!!

It’s that time again. The holidays have ended and a new year is upon us. While some may be full of hope about the prospect of getting started on those health and fitness resolutions, others may be wondering just how to get on track toward their goals.

Three women from Whitestone, Queens decided to organize The Whitestone Grace Wellness Fair in order to help their neighbors do just this. The committee of three are health and wellness experts: Sabrina Havens is a Licensed Acupuncturist, and Herbalist from North Nassau Acupuncture LLC in Great Neck and a Young Living Esssential Oils Distributor. She will be at the fair providing massage, acupuncture demos and therapeutic essential oil samples; Vera Levine is a retired Registered Nurse who has previously worked in Mount Sinai, Booth Memorial, Brookdale and North Shore Hospitals. In past years, she ran three health fairs at the church and was instrumental in bringing in medical professionals from NY-Presbyterian Hospital, who will be joining us this year at the Wellness Fair to provide all kinds of information regarding prevention and screening; Susan Blayer is a NY state licensed Psychotherapist and certified Group Fitness and YogaFit Instructor, who created her own fusion exercise class called Yogalicious Fitness (www.yogaliciousfitness.com).

The trio, who met through Grace Episcopal Church, which has offered the space for the event, are passionate about providing this forum for the community to encourage residents to improve themselves, their relationships, and their quality of life.

Another objective of the Wellness Fair is to give local health and fitness professionals an opportunity for networking and free publicity. As Ms. Blayer puts it, “We wanted to make sure that we were giving back to the community, not only by providing great wellness information, but also by offering local businesses, particularly the smaller ones, with an opportunity to advertise their services, free of charge.” While there is a request for participants to make a tax-deductible donation of their choice to the church (for providing the space), this is not required to have a booth and/or do a demo or presentation at the fair.

Whether attendees want to trim down and tone up, beautify and anti-age, reduce pain and promote healing, or spice up their romantic relationships, this fair has it covered!

Amongst those who were first to sign on for this day of wellness was local Chiropractor Dr. Stephen Simonetti, who will be bringing his adjustment table to do posture screenings. He will also be doing a presentation about making health and lifestyle choices. Dr. Jay Feld, Licensed Marriage and Couple Therapist, is on board to enlighten us about the best ways to boost intimacy and happiness in our relationships.

Representatives from the Whitestone New York Sports Club branch (under the leadership of Fitness Manger, Emmanuel Laflotte) will be providing body fat analysis, a live demo of their popular UXF training class, and will be sharing ways to get the most out of your diet and exercise program. Health Nuts, of Bayside, will be sending Manager Carla Duarte and her team to speak on the importance of investigating alternative medicine to increase health and heal ailments. These knowledgeable representatives from this extensive local health food store will also have on hand that day many of supplements and superfoods for purchase, and will be there to answer nutrition and supplement-related questions.

Two local moms, Kourtney Radice and Marissa Luna, who are Beachbody coaches and creators of Fixed Up Recipes, will be present to promote their latest and greatest weight loss and fitness programs. Michelle Khan, Isagenix associate and Sr. Director at Nerium International will be dolling out anti-aging and detox tips, product information and yes, samples!! Speaking of samples, if you haven’t tried Fitteam Fit All-Natural & Organic Weight Loss and Energy Drink, stop by Pam Miceli’s table to try it out. There will also be natural beauty products from Donna Casali of BeautyCounter, who will be talking to the crowd about non-toxic cosmetics. Dandylion Tea will be bringing hand-crafted, health-boosting teas full of dandelion goodness. Participants will also find tables with Chinese herbals and natural bee-products. To top it all off, there will be a live DJ to liven the mood!

Sabrina, Vera and Susan hope this event will help Queens’ residents tap into the best local resources for health, fitness and wellness. Again, it is open to the public and absolutely free to attend.

Favorite Things Friday (FTF): LOVE is in the Air…..

HELLLLLOOOOOOOW My Gorg Peeps….Welcome to this week’s Favorite Things Friday (FTF)!!!

im not perfect but i am blessed

As you probs know by now, one of the YF Lifestyle practices is to cultivate an “attitude of gratitude”- and one of my favorite exercises for this is called “Finding Your Favorite Things.” (Working out not only your body, but your mind & spirit as well here at Yogalicious!)

Its pretty simple- every day, especially when you are finding yourself feeling negative or holding on to your “have nots” (all the things that arent going your way, that you arent getting right now the way you want them), you take a few deep, cleansing resting breaths, maybe close your eyes, and ask yourself- “What were my favorite things over the past 24 hours? What am I grateful for today? What Have I been blessed with this week???

Well this week I was kinda sucker-punched with an overwhelming feeling of how blessed I am to have so much, and so many different types of love in my life– both given and received.

This little love-fest all started today when, listening to a wedding going on in the church below my office, I got teary-eyed as Pachelbel’s Canon in D was played, as it had on my own wedding day, as my beautiful bridesmaids walked down the aisle.  I always find this piece, the way it moves and builds and grabs your heart, to be as magnificent as I felt that day….take a listen:

A bit later, as I opened the door to my next client, I was hit with another sensory memory whammy– they had chosen Ave Maria for one of their songs, which was the song I actually walked down the aisle to– and which has much deeply personal meaning and significance for me (hint- my middle name is Marie 🙂 ). From those first few notes, I get the chills, every single time I hear this song and I love, love, love this version by the Celtic Women & with the English translation:

Perhaps I had already been primed by this music that spoke to my history and my heart, but I could barely hold back the tears when, upon returning from the bathroom on my way back to the office, I stopped as the couple was ready to make their first walk, as newlyweds, down the aisle.  I hadnt seen before, but this pair was an interracial, gay male couple– and both were literally crying with joy and gratitude as they grasped each other’s hands so tightly I could almost feel it. Then, only a few feet away from where I stood, they embraced as if they had just entered into the most magical moment of their lives.  (This was actually when the sucker-punch to my heart happened lol)

wed

Then…. July 12, 1998…..

In that moment I really took a moment to reflect on the ways that perhaps I take my marriage, and perhaps marriage in general, for granted. But mine has taught me what “for better or worse” really means.  It has made me go places I never thought I would before– spiritually, emotionally, literally (Umm, sleeping in a puddle in a tent in a thunderstorm in New Mexico, anyone??).  It has shown me how to truly be supportive and on the flip side, how being so very close to someone can make you quite cruel.  It has been invaluable in teaching me how to prepare couples who seek pre-marital counsel, or guide those who need post-nuptial help.  In good times and bad, my marriage has been proof of our dedication to keep trying our best, even when that is far from good enough.  I would not be the person I am today without my husband, and since I much prefer the person I am now, for that, and so many other things, I thank him– which I know I do not do nearly enough.

And Now– this summer, Cape Cod 2014

Ok, ok, ok enough of that sap……lets see what else is on my FTF  LOVE list this week……

DSC03050DSC04792

Well, keeping with the theme, I was reflecting on the other types of deep, profound love in my life.  Of course, at the very top of the list is my incredible daughter.  I am so grateful for simply the honor of being her mommy & every single thing that entails.  Today I realized that I cannot remember who I was without the sound of her laughter, or the look on her face when she is afraid and needs me to comfort her– her specific sweet dirty-kid smell, the feel of her arms around me.  There is nothing in the world that prepared me for this kind of love, and it really is true and not cliche that there arent adequate words to describe it.  And no matter how many times she mouths off, or doesnt listen, or leaves her socks in every conceivable corner of our house, that all-encompassing feeling that I would do anything in the world to keep this kid safe, and to make sure she knows just how very much she is adored, never, ever fades.  In fact, it only grows stronger as she becomes more and more of her own little wonderful person.

DSC03206sopjh smile

Today, I give thanks for ALL the females in my life: For my best and closest friends (some of whom are family members); For the Yogalicious Fitness girls who make me laugh and give me such joy when we share a class together;

For my Friday clients– all women, who, although they are all of different ages (from 19-65), different races and cultural backgrounds, and have different reasons for meeting with me, have some very important things in common:  Their bravery in showing up, week after week, to grapple with the hardest issues of their lives, to ask the hardest questions of themselves, to be vulnerable and open to the process of therapy.  It is a special kind of love, that which a therapist feels for their client.  It is not part of your personal life, the way your kin or your friendships are– but it is nonetheless personal on a very human level. I love these women for who they are– bright, unique shining stars– without any agenda or want of them for myself except the hope that I can help them become the version of themselves they most want to be.  It touches me and humbles me to think that they (and all of my clients) would allow me to witness their pain and walk beside them on their journey– that they would trust my unconditional love for them (which is sometimes tough love)– and that when their season in therapy is over, that they know we have shared something important and vibrant and can only be compared to the transformative magic that happens when you have that agape love– the kind of love that just makes you wish the very best for another, and to somehow do your part to ease their pain and suffering.

DSC03488

Which is a nice segue into another love of my life that I feel so very, very grateful for: my work as a therapist.  It has taken what felt like a long time to get to this place where I can actually do the work I have always felt called to do.  While I have been a mental health professional for about two decades now (am I giving away my age here????), it is only in the past two years that I have been able to focus on direct work with clients, pretty much on my own terms, making my own schedule, loving every session– even the hard ones!!  I am so very very very thankful for this vocation.  It is so much a part of who I am and who I always want to be.

Yes, soooo very much to be grateful for this FTF!!! Kinda serious FTF this week, huh? 🙂

As always, Im grateful for all of you, who take the time to come visit me here on YogaliciousFitness.com!!

So again: What are you grateful for this week?  What are your favorite things you’re loving on today?

Favorite Things Friday (FTF): I <3 NY

Well, Hellooooo There Glogis!  Happy to be here posting another Favorite Things Friday (FTF)!!!

obstacles gratitude

As you probs know by now, one of the YF Lifestyle practices is to cultivate an “attitude of gratitude”- and one of my favorite exercises for this is called “Finding Your Favorite Things.” (Working out not only your body, but your mind & spirit as well here at Yogalicious!)

gratitude wheel

First and foremost, I want to share how blessed I feel to have so much love in my family.  My Aunt Roe & Uncle Vinny’s 50th!!! Wedding Anniversary celebration last weekend reminded me of the power of love, and how we have it in abundance with the Lorenzo clan! Here are a few highlights:

the next Gen….

Today I also want to acknowledge that Im grateful for my health– not just that of my body, but of my mind & spirit as well.  One of the reasons I became a Psychotherapist is because I truly believe in the power of personal transformation and the beauty that flows through a life dedicated to self-exploration, actualization and deeper, more fulfilling connections with others.  I explained in my last video that, through what could be perceived as stalled progress towards continued detoxing and cleansing, I have learned that there is a season and a reason for everything, and that permanent, lasting change/growth is not a linear process.  So I thank God for the wisdom today to trust myself, my body and to let things be exactly as they are, because they are always exactly where they need to be!

broadway urban space

On that note– where I needed to be on this Favorite Things Friday was smack in the middle of my favorite city in the entire world– NEW YORK CITY.  My love this week is particular to the mid-town area– Broadway from 34th Herald Square up to 42nd & Bryant Park.  I am in this area just about every Friday and it is AMAZING.  Something new and unique is always happening here!  Well today, Urban Space sponsored a whole bunch of food stands!!!

urban space

What a perfect treat for this Fun Food Friday lol.  Speaking of treats…..I started this glorious day being thankful for the greatness that is the Godiva Pumpkin Truffelata!! OMfreakinGEEEEEEE- now you know from last weeks FTF that I ADORE all things pumkin…& I love chocolate truffles– well, guess what- this Godiva Pumpkin Truffelata actually has a pumpkin spice truffle in the mix!!  This thing tastes exactly like a pumpkin pie ice cream smoothie.  TO DIE FOR!!

godiva

Truffelata on the Train!

Part of the theme of this FTF I guess is that Im thankful for the process of finding a peaceful place in my life where I balance fun and discipline, pleasure and health- and for me, this manifests itself in my food choices.  So today I started with a luscious sweet-treat breakfast of yes, the Pumpkin Truffelata…which paired nicely with some gorgeous gluten-free creation from FIKA (with its glamorous Scandinavian sounding name, which of course I cant pronounce).  This little cutie was a almond meringue cookie topped with fluffy chocolate mousse, covered in dark chocolate.  Unfortunately, I didnt take a pic before I demolished it…..

fika gf cookie

One thing I just love love love about NYC is that its truly a walking town.  There is so much going on & so much charged energy that you can walk 20 blocks without even noticing it! Last week I shared my FTF open toe studded booties I was loving.  Well today, these boots (knee-high suede– YES, PLEASE!!) were made for walking:

DSC05496

Bootilicious!!!

That lovely breakie I mentioned left me full until evening, when I hit the Urban Space food vendors– and chose the Lobster BLT from Red Hook Lobster Pound.  Now, that bun it came on was not gluten free, so I got creative…lugged the bag home (oh, the temptation not to inhale those plump, seductive lobster chunks on the bus!), picked up some Dragon Salmon Avocado sushi, and topped a lovely petite green salad with ginger dressing with the seafood-sushi combo.  One of the best dinners Ive had in a long time!!!

red hook lobsterlobster sushi

So did I mention how irritating it can be to sit on a bus from Manhattan to Queens in rush hour traffic?  Well, this is FTF, so we will flip that script and focus on the positives!!  I am so happy to have had the Pandora App on my phone– and the 70s funk and light rock stations!!!!!  I LOVES me some good 70s music!!!  Here are a few of my favs that got me thru the creeping pace of public transportation:

farrells

HAPPY BDAY TIMMY!!!

These tunes are dedicated to my friend Timmy– who is (YAY!!) having a 70s themed birthday party tomorrow night for his 50th!!  Cant wait to funk it out with the Farrells!!!

Last, but not least, this FTF would not be complete without mention of one of my favorite people in the whole wide world, my sister Tracy.  We try to see each other about every month-6 weeks, which sometimes gets challenging since she lives 2 hours away from me in CT.  So we are missing each other’s Rainbow Unicorn Love during this long stretch since the last time we hung out in the summer… But YAY for FACETIME!!!  Me, Soph, & Buddy will actually get to SEE IN REAL TIME Trac & Cooper thanks to the miracle of our IPhones!!

DSC05229
My Two Lovelies!!!

Yes, soooo very much to be grateful for this FTF!!!

AND, as always, Im grateful for all of you, who take the time to come visit me here on YogaliciousFitness.com!!

So again: What are you grateful for this week?  What are your favorite things you’re loving on today?

So here we are for this week’s FTF:

First of all…can I say again and again and again to all who will listen how much I ADORE ALL THINGS FALL!!  Pumpkin flavored pumpkin pie spice anything, GORG sunny-cool-ish weather, Color like Crazy leaves, Boots & Blazers, Halloween, Thanksgiving– just really one of God’s great gifts to us every year, especially here in NY.

Right on time-- Pumpkin Truffles!! Joy!!

Right on time– Pumpkin Truffles!! Joy!!

Another blessing is having an awesome space to work in– my favorite office ever to see clients is the one I use on Fridays @ Advent Lutheran Church on Broadway & 93rd.  Not only is the loft office comfy (thanks to my co-worker) but the windows– oh, the windows.  Ill let u take a look in the video below, which I really took because this church is just always jumping!  I mean there is always something super-cool going on there.  Like today, for instance, there was a Symphony– yes, a symphony- playing in the church! Take a listen & a lookie:

And while we are watching videos for this FTF, Ive gotta include this one my little darling made the other day….Can I just tell you what a blessing it is to be able to play with and enjoy and create and laugh and play with my daughter?  Please, please, please all u parents out there– ENJOY your children!!!!  You dont get all of those moments back & great memories are just waiting to be made!

Cant have a Favorite things post without including these freakin rockin booties!!!  I cant tell you how many comments/compliments I get when I wear these things, which is just about always– Perfection for these warm autumn days & sooooo incredibly comfy– I can walk 20 city blocks easily (although I did fall down a fight of stairs in them, just keepin it real lol)

DSC05478

If you’ve been following my 21 day detox & cleanse you will know how grateful Ive been for this experience– and for being able to continue it starting Monday (after those pumpkin truffles lol).  This new book I got is awesome and will def provide some inspiration (Go to SHOP to get ur copy, too!):

Love, love, loving the fantastic fresh basil and holy hotness red peppers from my husband’s garden (the tomatoes are terrific too!!) Nothing better than using food grown in your own backyard:

Im a bit obsessed with my fav new HBO drama– The Leftovers.  It makes me profoundly sad, & constantly turning over the question of why people make the choices they do in response to overwhelming loss.  And, ummmm….. where the hell did Justin Theroux come from?? In every episode he achieves perfection as a never satisfied, tortured soul– displaying a deep, plagued tenderness yet never losing the tough-guy exterior.  Just brilliant– Cant wait for the finale for the first season this Sunday!!
